Well, It all started
in Karl Schulze's garage about a year ago, as we began to build RC
Submarines out of a peanut butter jar and some RC car parts. This is
what first sparked our interests in Submarines. Our first
sub was like our first taste of ice cream, we never knew it could be
so good and interesting. After the USS Peanut Butter (left)
subsequently sank in Karl's pool due to faulty seals, we began to
think bigger. Going down to the local Home Depot, Chris
Crutchfield's dad bought us some 4" diameter ABS pipe to make
our new and improved submarine. At the same time, in school,
Chris C. and Karl S. wanted to join a club. However, there
were no clubs around that piqued their interest. Chris
suggested starting a club, and Karl followed with the idea of
starting a Robotics club to make submarines for fun. We then
attracted many of our fellow students to join our group, one
of which was Chris LaFlash. While browsing the internet
looking for electronic layouts for our next creation, he stumbled
across the IAUVC
page. After careful overview of the competition, we got excited and
began to think about entering this competition. The downside was
that we would have to represent our school in Florida, where the
competition was held. However we were determined, so here we are,
the Amador Valley High School Robotics Club, entering in the
International Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Competition for the
second time.
Our
first year in the competition proved very fruitful as we placed 6th
amongst 12 of the top Universities and tech schools in the world. We
learned a lot in the friendly, yet swelteringly hot atmosphere of
Orlando Florida, and with our new found knowledge are all determined
to return as the first high school in this collegiate event, and
bring pride to our names, school, and community.
