Engines
We use two Motorguide ET22 trolling motors as our main thrusters and two heavily
modified rule 1100 bilge pumps equipped with CPU fans for propeller blades as our
vertical thrusters.
The main thrusters
have been modified in order to take one of our Brad Harrison industrial
connectors as well as to carry internal water alarms that allow us to detect if
water has penetrated into the engine housings.
The vertical thrusters
are heavily modified Rule 1100 Bilge Pumps. These motors are an excellent source
of relatively small electric engines that are water sealed. We of course
modified them to make them an even better seal as well as installed water alarms
on the inside and bring our Brad Harrison water proof connectors straight to the
engine contacts. The original design of these motors calls for a simple impeller
on the shaft. This is obviously incompatible with the new purpose of driving our
submarine up and down, thus we installed propellers. Small propellers are hard
to find so we went to CPU fans, which have a very high pitch and high blade
count and happened to compliment our bilge pump motors very well. These motors
are extremely cheap and prone to leakage at depth due to its relatively weak
rotary seals - thus we have assembled three full sets.
